SKÚŠKA September 23– December 9, 2012 / AYAKO ROKKAKU - Ayako Rokkaku, an exceptionally gifted artist, rocketed to fame on the contemporary art scene after her exhibition at the Galerie Delaive in Amsterdam in 2007. The young Japanese artist lives and works in Berlin, Amsterdam and Tokyo, where she was born. She began to paint ten years ago and immediately attracted attention from experts and the general public. Rokkaku’s works display her unique themes and technique. She applies the bright acrylic paint directly to the cardboard or canvas with her bare hands. Ayako Rokkaku has perfected her technique and now creates large paintings on canvas. Children, animals and nature are her main source of inspiration. The central theme in her work is that of little girls with long arms and big eyes, reminiscent of Japanese animation, combined with recurring symbols such as animals and flower gardens. Rokkaku works in the studio and in exhibition halls, thus audiences, connoisseurs of art and children can be directly involved in her work. They can catch a whiff of paint and touch the canvas. Rokkaku will create her “performance painting” in front of a live audience at the Danubiana.
