The method of associative interpretation is the basic principle of artistic creation employed by the multimedia artist Svetozár Ilavský. His oeuvre reflects a diversity of approaches as well as stimuli, citations, borrowings and paraphrases of works of other artists. Pleonasm has been the key subject of his work for over twenty years. It contains a large number of varied components. Concept, record, drawing, painting, graffiti, relief, sculpture, assemblage, motion and sound – all these and perhaps even other elements are part of his creations. Spatial perception is a permanent feature of his artistic reflection. Ilavský reduces matter to the dematerialised minimalist form. Actually, his sculptures, particularly the figures captured in motion, involved in sporting activities, are drawings materialised in space. They may be identified as paraphrases of the ethereal figures created by Alberto Giacometti. The silhouette of the Runner sited on the bank of the River Danube looks as if it emerged from his paintings. Set against the background of the water surface it suggests timelessness and alludes to history.
