The doyen of Slovak sculpture of the latter part of the 20th century entered the history of modern Slovak sculpture as a painter – author of collages he has created along with his paintings since the mid-1960s. However, his work is primarily concerned with sculpture. As a sensitive modeller, he has created dozens of fictitious portraits and figurative monuments associated with national history, accomplishing them with visual renderings. His work employs the method of free associations inspired by Surrealism. Apart from historical subjects, he has been concerned with recent history and contemporary themes. Cast in bronze, his sculptures also exploit other methods, including the assemblage of various found objects integrated into a single object. His sculpture In Memory of Artists, an object made of wood and nails stabbed into the sculpture’s body, symbolises the pain of artists suffering the hardship of totalitarianism.
